Lodge St. James No.256

Lodge St. James No. 256 is an established and active Lodge meeting within Peterhead Masonic Temple, forming an important part of Freemasonry in the town and the wider Province of Aberdeenshire East.

Origins and Formation

The origins of the Lodge date to 1814, when a group of Brethren—originally members of a Lodge in Aberdeen—petitioned to establish a new Lodge in Peterhead.

This led to the formation of what became Lodge St. James of Peterhead, which was subsequently placed on the roll of the Grand Lodge of Scotland as No. 256.

Early Development

From its foundation, the Lodge quickly became part of the growing Masonic presence within Peterhead, working alongside existing Lodges in the town and contributing to the development of Freemasonry locally.

Over time, the Lodge experienced periods of activity and dormancy, as was common with many Lodges of the period, before being re-established and strengthened through the efforts of committed members in the late 19th century.

Growth and Continuity

Since its reconstitution, Lodge St. James No. 256 has continued to develop as an active and respected Lodge within the Province.

It has played a consistent role in:

  • Supporting Masonic tradition and practice
  • Contributing to charitable work
  • Maintaining strong links with other Lodges within Aberdeenshire East

The Lodge meets regularly within Peterhead Masonic Temple and remains an integral part of its ongoing activity.

Bicentenary

In 2014, the Lodge celebrated its 200th anniversary, marking two centuries of continuous Masonic presence and contribution within the community. (pglae.co.uk)
