Freemasonry in Aberdeenshire East

Freemasonry in Peterhead forms part of the Province of Aberdeenshire East, operating under the authority of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Aberdeenshire East.

The Province provides guidance, structure, and support to the Lodges within the area, ensuring that Freemasonry continues to thrive while maintaining its traditions, standards, and values.


The Provincial Grand Lodge

The Provincial Grand Lodge of Aberdeenshire East oversees a number of Lodges across the region, bringing them together as part of a wider Masonic community.

Its role includes:

  • Supporting local Lodges and their members
  • Promoting the values of Freemasonry
  • Encouraging fellowship across the Province
  • Supporting charitable and community work

The Lodges meeting at Peterhead Masonic Temple are proud to be part of this wider Province.


Provincial Leadership

The Province is led by the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master, who provides leadership and direction across all Lodges within Aberdeenshire East.

A Proud History

The Provincial Grand Lodge of Aberdeenshire East was reconstituted in 1871, marking the beginning of its modern structure.

The first Provincial Grand Master following its reconstitution was Brother Captain Charles Hunter, who was affiliated to Keith Lodge of Peterhead No. 56 prior to the reconstitution and was installed on 9th October 1871.

The Lodges meeting at Peterhead Masonic Temple have a proud history of contributing to leadership within the Province.

Members who have served as Provincial Grand Master include:

  • Captain Charles Hunter (1871–1877) – Affiliated to Keith Lodge No. 56
  • William Boyde (1877–1899) – Keith Lodge No. 56
  • William H. Leask (1904–1919) – Keith Lodge No. 56
  • William McDougall Gordon (1979–1984) – Keith Lodge No. 56
  • James Grubb (1994–1999) – Keith Lodge No. 56
  • Alfred J.W. Davidson (2004–2009) – Lodge St. James No. 256

This reflects the long-standing contribution of Peterhead Lodges to Freemasonry within Aberdeenshire East.

Freemasonry in Scotland operates within a structured framework:

  • The Grand Lodge of Scotland
  • Provincial Grand Lodges (such as Aberdeenshire East)
  • Local Lodges (including those meeting in Peterhead)
